In Westfield, Scotch Plains, Cranford, and the surrounding area, the economy is supported by the strong transportation and manufacturing industries. The local economy is served by railroad lines and major highways such as Highways I-78 and I-278, and US Routes 1 and 9. Also having a significant impact on the economy is the Newark International Airport due in part to the employment opportunities.
In the local area, as of the 2000 census, the highest percentage of jobs were in the fields of Manufacturing, Education, Management, and Retail-Trade. Because of the employment opportunities, mostly in these areas, the average family income is near $79,000 and the average house value is approximately $180,000.
The top employers in the Westfield, Cranford, and Scotch Plains area include the local hospitals such as Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, General Motors, and pharmaceutical companies. The Downtown Westfield Corporation (DWC), created in 1996, is the manager of the Special Improvement District. Downtown Westfield has quaint but elegant shopping for the whole family with shops such as Ann Taylor, Victoria's Secret, The Gap, and Chico's, plus many more. Main Street also has special treat shops such as Haagen Dazs, Starbuck's Coffee, and Cold Stone Creamery.
